Fellas, I thought you'd be interested in some loggings up here on the Queen Charlottes, just to the south of the Alaska panhandle. I'm still learning the lay of the land, and my equipment. Running battery power, with 2 mini-Beverages of approx. 350' each. One is N/S, and the other is towards Australia. Still working out the bugs, though. Internet access is dreadfully slow in the town of Masset, and intermittent. The days are very long with darkness not happening until after 23:00 local, and light is before 05:00 local. Conditions were poor this morning, compared to 2 days previous. On a positive note, after DXing this morning, I donned my wet suit, and went out into the ocean to catch some big Dungeness crab, abundant in these waters (very cold, but nice with the wet suit). I'll be trying for Australia on MW more often, as well as Alaska. Here is a selection of my loggings. Good dx to you all! 208, OYN Nome, Jul 3 0508 - Loop broadcast of this NDB at fair level stating that the pilot weather briefings are suspended until 1400Z (0600 local). Rare to hear these taped loops further south. 393, TOG Togiak, AK, Jul 3 0511 - ATIS information from presumed Togiak at poor to fair level. 580, KRSA, Petersburg, Jul 5 0602 - Local weather, followed by ID: 'Making a difference, KRSA'. Very good reception. Usually heard all day, at fair levels, better in the evenings, but with cochannel stations, but best during our local mornings with excellent reception in the clear. Mostly religious programming. Also Jul 3 1420 - Excellent reception with inspirational Christian music. 630, KJNO, Jul 3 1400 - As the morning progresses, and the trans- Pacific stations, and mainland US stations fade, I started to listen for the more local Alaskans. First heard was KJNO from Juneau, with 'Capitol Radio' and KJNO IDs. Multiple ads for local businesses at 1422 including one for 'the sweet sound of a chain saw'. 'Talk Radio KJNO' at 1423:30. Good reception. 650, KENI, Anchorage, Jul 3 1429 - ABC news Perspective program at 1429. 'Newsradio 650, KENI' ID at 1431 at fair reception. 660, KFAR, Fairbanks, Jul 6 1332 - Poor signal strength, in the muck, but a couple of KFAR IDs clearly heard. 680, KBRW, Barrow, Jul 6 1334 - Very weak, but in the clear with KBRW ID, and sports update. 700, KBYR, Anchorage, Jul 7 1259 - Finally got an ID through some local hash, as 'Talk Radio, KBYR'. Good reception otherwise. 750, KFQD, Anchorage, Jul 5 1321 - Fair reception with ID as, '750 newsradio KFQD'. Public service announcements followed, and then an ad for Alaska Tire Service. 770, [sic, must mean 800, q.v.] KINY, Jul 5 1325 - S9+ signal with oldies music, and ID at 1337 as, 'The music connection, KINY'. 770, KCHU, Valdez, Jul 6 1434 - Presumed logging with NPR news. I found the Alaskans abundant after the fade out of Pacific stations, as well as the lower 48 states for the most part. Unfortunately, due to a family emergency, my planned 3 week stay is being cut short. Hopefully, I'll be able to monitor once more tomorrow morning. 770, KCHU, Valdez, Jul 7 1330 - NPR news at 1330. No local ID at 1400 and went into NPR news again. Finally ID'd for KCHU, Valdez at 1449. 790, KCAM, Jul 5 1642 - S6 to S7 signal strength with Country top 50 countdown. 800, KINY, Juneau, Jul 3 1435 - Interesting relay of WXJ 25 Juneau weather radio with ID at 1440. Continued until 1344 [1444?] with an ID as: 'The music connection, KINY'. Very good reception. [see 770] 890, KBBI, Homer, Jul 6 1342 - Fair to good reception. ID for KBBI, Homer at 1358. NPR programming, into local weather. 1080, KUDO, Anchorage, Jul 6 1319 - Good signal with an Anchorage jingle and ID for KUDO, and then into the weather. 1110, KAGV, Big Lake, Jul 6 1410 - A tentative logging at fair level. Christian programming, with 'Through the Bible Radio'. No definite ID, though. 1140, KSLD, Soldotna, Jul 6 1350 - Nice ID as, 'The king of the Kenai, 1140', and again at 1402 as, 'You are on the King, KSLD, Kenai, Soldotna, and Homer'. Gone by 1413, but back with good strength a few minutes later. 1229.97, KIFW, Sitka, Jul 6 1411 - Very good reception, but frustratingly few IDs. Bob and Laurie Morning Show. AM signal sounded a little distorted, so checked the frequency. They're actually on 1229.97. A weak cochannel right on frequency is also heard. Finally at 1431, short ID for KIFW. Don't usually hear an American station off frequency. 1610, USA (PRESUMED) TIS, Jul 5 1310 - My most interesting logging for the morning. TIS stations aren't usually heard here, but this morning there was one for what sounded like: 'Whittier to Bear Valley Memorial Tunnel' Open 5:30 am to 11:15 pm. Propane restricted to 100 lbs. All vehicles under surveillance. Enforcement by local and state authorities. Thank you for driving carefully. Speed restricted to 25 mph. Can someone identify who this is? I don't have any TIS stations listed for Alaska, so I'm assuming a station in the lower 48. Help please! (Volodya Salmaniw, Tow Hill, Queen Charlotte Is, BC, HCDX via DXLD) This IS in Alaska; Whittier is just SE of Anchorage; a Google hit: http://www.dot.state.ak.us/creg/whittiertunnel/virtualdrive.htm (gh) Your TIS 1610 is the tunnel between Whitter and Portage in South Central Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula. I have been through that tunnel many times back in the 50s as a child. My mother used to always state "That was the only train she was ever on with square wheels. hi. During parts of the day, you can drive between the tracks from Portage to Whittier now. In my day it was only for the train. The tunnel was opened up for auto traffic inbetween the times the train runs. Great going. Thanks, (Patrick Martin, OR, HCDX via DXLD) Checking the FCC list, it's: WPTI714 STATE OF ALASKA ANTON ANDERSON MEMORIAL TUNNEL. 10 watts in Portage, AK. Though not the continental USA, I'm still very pleased! Er, Alaska is very much in the continental USA, but not in the conterminous or contiguous USA (gh) ** ALBANIA [and non]. Albania / China: Checked 7120 today and have to say that this is the worst clash I witnessed in a long time. Two powerhouse signals of about equal strength but 10.8 Hz apart (both carriers were already on at 2127 tune-in), so the resulting mess got also further disfigured by a terrible, fast SAH. HFCC says the Chinese transmitter is Urumqi, and it indeed has to be a high power rig in western China to produce such a strong signal. Pleased to find 10 meters open July 9 from as far away as here, during some ham contest. Logged the following, all with different prefices: 2116, 28496, LU5EML, working lots of North Americans, and unlike many DX contesters, frequently giving his own call sign, and phonetically - -- imagine that! Signal report always 5914. Google search later indicates his name is Matías, en Buenos Aires 2120, 28490, LT0H, with KM4LMS, 5914. Search leads to Juan in Córdoba, altho this may also be a club/group call 2122, 28456, LR2F, didn`t catch whom working, nor handle. Seems to be another group/club station anyway. See also COSTA RICA. Now if RAE would operate on 11 meters with a few watts, maybe we could hear them! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRALIA. 1683.21, Radio Club, Jul 3 1243 - Presumed logging of Sydney (Lakemba), NSW with 400w. Listed as 24 hr Greek, although the music sounded somewhat Arabic/middle eastern. Weak audio. 1701.06, Jul 3 1244 - Two stations here. I always marvel at the strength of these flea-powered Aussies on this channel (and always slightly off frequency). When the rest of the band is dead, there often still is audio on this channel to North America. The dominant station is Radio 1701, Brisbane with Hindi music (listed as 100w) over cochannel probable NTC Radio 16, Silverwater, NSW with Australian accented English programming (this one I don't normally ever hear). (Volodya Salmaniw, Tow Hill, Queen Charlotte Is, BC, HCDX via DXLD) ** AUSTRALIA [and non]: July 8, NTSS/ABC 4835//4910 from 2140, 4835 much stronger, also 5025 at 2158 after sign-off Tashkent, but very weak. I suggest other reporters to do the same for posterity (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. 810, UnID, Jul 6 1240 - I don't have my WRTH with me, so I'll need assistance identifying this one. Continuous Weather Canada forecast in English and French for various regions, including the South Klondikes, Central Yukon and Dawson. This continued past 1301. Is this a Yukon station? (Volodya Salmaniw, Tow Hill, Queen Charlotte Is, BC, HCDX via DXLD) NRC AM Log and WRTH show only two Canadians on 810, in Winnipeg and New Brunswick! Must be a TIS (gh, DXLD) ** CANADA. Radio station CKMX in Calgary has flipped formats and is now known as "Classic Country, AM 1060." According to a news item by one of my colleagues, the station's full lineup will be announced within a week or two. Until everything settles down, the station is playing non-stop music, without announcers or commercial interruption. (If I'm not mistaken, this station has a shortwave relay on 6030 kHz. Haven't had a chance to do a scan yet (7:30 a.m. local as I type)... later today, since there's nothing else to do but stay in, as we're all wet now. However, 530 off. 1180 is either the "other" transmitter located farther east (suspect), or the big one on greatly reduced power. Very fluttery, and Radio Martí-Marathon is at equal level, something never experienced here before. 1080 and 1120 Cadena Habana seemingly silent, too. 590 Musical silent. 950 Reloj threshold, suspect not the mega transmitter at Pastora, but the Sancti Spíritus or Santiago de Cuba site. Am guessing that most of Habana is without power; TV reports will tell shortly I guess. The behemoth 640 Progreso is silent as well. Habana must be flattened. 640 with Elvis' "Blue Suede Shoes" and a pair of old phart announcers, whining about retention ponds and not being able to play golf. Mentioned "US-27" -- Ocala auto dealership spot. WVLG, Wildwood, I guess. Never heard them before, wow, with so many Cubans off, DX may be awesome day and night. Yup, "AM 640 WVLG" ID just now. I guess this means no airborne Martí tonight, just a little too bumpy, not enough airsick bags. Wind predictions are 40-60 mph right on Pinellas coast later, which will be no problem here. But I have little faith in our rickety above- ground power poles and ancient grid here, so I am glad I have a generator, etc. this year (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida, USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, July 9, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Another one bites the dust --- Add 5025 shortwave to the growing list of MIA's from Cuba. Paradise isn't looking so hot any more (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida, 1343 UT July 9, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 11930 et al. nicely jammed. Status quo on directing what power generating remains against Martí. Arnaldo Coro Antich must be prouder than ever. Venceremos! (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida, 1405 UT July 9, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Checking at 1255 UT July 9, Martí on 9565 had no audible jamming, nor did 7405, but OC on 11845 had a bit of bubbling, programming from 1300. 13630 and 13820 also only had barely audible jamming. My impression is that most, but not all the jammers are off. Of course, all RHC frequencies were still missing, so we were forced to listen to R. Martí for news about hurricane damage on the Island, which apparently has been extensive. CRI relay via Cuba on 9570 also missing, tho it doesn`t take a hurricane to unavailablize that (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 590.4, UNID(S); something popped up here, seemingly carrier-only. At the same time, carrier atop 590.0, 1740 GMT 9 July. Recheck 1817, the off-frequency thing is gone, but the carrier atop WDIZ remains. Musical Nacional slowly being revived? 640, CUBA Radio Progreso, Guanabacoa, Ciudad de la Habana; 1748 GMT 9 July with "línea eléctrica" updates for various provinces. Strong signal, back on indeed. 1180, CUBA, Radio Rebelde, Villa María (or Guanabacoa, depending on source), Ciudad de la Habana; back up around 1750 GMT 9 July, just as I predicted it would be next up. Suspect Guanabacoa is right, explaining one engineer and/or power up roughly paralleling 640 and this appearing together. 5025 shortwave still off, not at the same site of course. BTW, heard a report that referenced the Cuban city of la Julia. To my surprise, they actually pronounced it "Jewel-ia" and not "Hu-lia." Interesting trivia (Terry Krueger, Clearwater FL, 1843 UT July 9, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Radio Habana Cuba finally got some power back, July 9 at 2143, with open carriers found on 11875, 11760 and 9550; at 2202 joined programming in progress, a round-table discussion of the hurricane damage. But a few minutes later a SW fadeout diminished the signals, great timing. Earlier, during the single hour R. Martí is on 13m, there was pulse jamming clearly audible at 2108, at the rate of about 4 per second, mixing with Delano 21500, where there is usually no jamming to be heard. Conditions must have been up for Cuba and down for California (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 5025 silent as I type, 2220 GMT 9 July, but David Potter reports they were back up a little while ago. So they must be working on it. Oops, at 2225 5025 is back up and yes as Potter reports, just as strong as pre-Dennis. 9550 up awhile ago -- but not RHC, instead with Rebelde audio (or at least whatever Rebelde net is relaying), parallel 1180 (but alas, 1180 is now [again] hosed up, very weak, sometimes bumps up to full power for 1-2 seconds). Where's Arnie with his soldering iron when we need him? I have to give Fidel's old engineering thugs full credit: they brought up the radio power across western Cuba far quicker than North Carolina-based capitalist, price-gouging asshole pig Progress Energy did in this area last year. Socialism is great. So, where's my rice allocation for July? Two rain bands with 70+ mph, hopefully no more but the worst won't clear me until around midnight. So far, the main longwire and pirate FM stick survives Cool (Terry Krueger, Clearwater FL, 2231 UT July 9, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 6000 also up and blowing in with the Rebelde audio relay, 2238 GMT 9 July. The Old Man is talking, very high-pitched, suspect he needs a little more high blood pressure meds tonight. Uh oh, winds picking up, about 50 now. Another band coming in I guess. Time to check the radar and get the dinner done while the power is stable (Terry Krueger, ibid.) Saludos cordiales amigos, de vuelta al aire las emisoras cubanas Radio Habana en 6000 kHz y Radio Rebelde por 5025 kHz transmitiendo simultáneamente una programación especial después del paso demoledor del Huracán Dennis (Dino Bloise, Hollywood, Florida, Estados Unidos, 0025 UT July 10, dxldyg via DXLD) 610, CUBA; 1029+ 10 July. Presume one of the Rebelde transmitters, just a horrid, loud buzz. WIOD weak underneath. 1120, CUBA, Radio Cadena Habana, Artemisa, La Habana; 0740+ 10 July. (R. PIRATE MUSIC ITALY: 6878.1, Jul 5, 0000-0102, Thanks to an alert from Dr. Tim, I first tuned this station in on a web receiver in England. I was surprised at the signal strength, as this station claimed to be using low power. By 0000 I could hear some weak audio on my receiver in New York. I recognized "What a Feeling" at 0011, and that the announcements were in Italian, as this station was relaying an Italian FM station. An e-mail from the station operator, McGiver confirmed he was only running 30 watts on an R&S SK010 transmitter. A small amendment re Rohrdorf 666: The silent periods of this transmitter are the same as introduced for 828 and 1485 a while ago, i.e. Mon-Fri 2100-0300 (winter 2200-0400), Sat+Sun 2100-0500 (winter 2200-0600). This means that for the first daily transmission hour, still MDR Info will be carried, since SWR cont.ra relays MDR Info Mon-Fri 2100-0400, Sat+Sun 2100-0556 (also here in winter one UT hour later of course). Noel asked about FM: SWR cont.ra is not on FM, with the small exception of a 300 watts transmitter on the roof of the SWR broadcasting house at Stuttgart (91.5 MHz). Actually SWR was not supposed to produce this sixth program at all, but they rolled it out by declaring it to be a DAB project while putting it on mediumwave (plus satellite for home listening) for a real world audience. So if a listener in southern Baden-Württemberg now wants to listen to the overnight relay of MDR Info and has poor reception on 576 and 1017: Bad luck. And here is a recording of SWR cont.ra wrapping up before 2100, with the described listeners fee lament, an accurate carrier cut and the line generator of one of my neighbours` TV: http://www.radioeins.de/_/meta/sendungen/apparat/050709_a1.ram Good night, (Kai Ludwig, Germany, July 10, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GOA. MONITORING NASA COMMUNICATIONS Here is the latest list of NASA frequencies worldwide. This list was originally compiled and presented by Larry Van Horn, Monitoring Times Assistant Editor, at the 1995 Grove Communications Expo. It was later updated by Bob Grove during a subsequent shuttle launch. After that trip Larry Van Horn has been updating the list as new information has become available to us. Websites may freely link to this page without permission of the author or Grove. This page is updated often and without notice so a link would be better suited for your website rather than a complete download of the list. This frequency list was last updated on April 12, 2005 The Monitoring Times Magazine NASA-Space Shuttle Mission Frequency Guide, By Larry Van Horn, Assistant Editor . . . http://www.monitoringtimes.com/nasa.html (via gh, WORLD OF RADIO 1280, DXLD) BTW, here in Enid, we normally have NASA TV on cable access channel 11, Pegasys, M-F 1600-1900 UT, but since NASA`s switch to a digital satellite feed, it`s been missing. Tho no one told the person responsible for compiling the program schedule roll which occupies great gobs of unproductive hours per day, now 14 instead of 11. Pegasys says NASA will be off for a couple of weeks while they install a digital receiver! There had been several months` notice of the impending change, as reported here in DXLD! Great timing, with Deep Impact, and the runup to space shuttle`s return to space. Will Pegasys have NASA back by July 13? Don`t count on it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** IRAQ. Re 5-112: ``According to TDP, http://www.tdp.info/irq.html the 16 x 500 kW site called ``Balad`` above is Salah el Din`` --- Probably put under ``Balad`` because the Balad airbase is more widely known. Also MSN Mappoint finds Balad only. I just went through various pictures from there but found no any trace of the shortwave site (curtains on the horizon etc.). Apparently it is not located in the immediate neighbourhood of the airbase. And of course this is not the other Salah el Deen in Iraqi Kurdistan. ``Abu Ghraib [note spelling here too --- where have I heard that name before?] 6 x 250; Babel 4 x 500; Salman Pack [sic] with 4 x 100, 18 x 50, 8 x 10 and 1 x 16 kW`` --- Well, I was thinking ``where have I heard that name before`` when the news from Abu Ghraib emerged, since I went through the matter of shortwave sites in Iraq already in 2003. Apparently all three sites were marked in this map: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/middle_east_and_asia/baghdad_iraq_80.jpg Babel is perhaps represented by the ``412 (300)`` symbol in eastern Baghdad. The Abu Ghraib and Salman Pak sites are quite obvious. Salman Pak was listed as origin of the Radio Baghdad shortwave transmissions in recent years, but I wonder if this was real information or rather speculation, gained from the circumstance that these transmissions did not sound like coming from professional 250 kW transmitters. By the way, it seems to me that not a single one of the main mediumwave transmitters in Iraq has been reactivated so far, not even the two 300 kW units loosely listed as ``Baghdad`` and probably located at either Abu Ghraib, Babel and/or Salman Pak. Still intact at all? Clandestine Radio Watch (CRW) noted the removal of the audio feed on July 9. An announcement on the group's Web site, tajdeed.net, and translated from Arabic by CRW states: "In the Name of Allah, the Benificent, the Merciful. "And the prayer and greeting on the militants' master and the inexperienced leader, auspicious Mohamed Bin Abdullah, peace be upon him. "Peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. "And till now... We wish to draw the attention of our noble pioneers that the site of the Tajdeed forum and Islamic recordings is closing because of an artistic failure in some server issues and not, as it has been spread, because of the recent events that befell Britain or because of the intervention of the authorities. Radio al-Tajdeed, which is transmitted to the Middle East over the French Eutelsat Hotbird satellite from studios in London, is sponsored by Mohammed al-Massari and funded through donations collected from listeners. The station was raided on May 6 by British authorities in connection to an investigation of suspected ties with the kidnappers of an Australian national inside Iraq. On May 21 it broadcast a speech by "Sheik" Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Al-Massari is a vocal critic of the West despite his legal residence in the U.K. Since the 1990's he has fronted several organizations in the U.S. and Europe that had ties to al Qaeda and Usama bin Laden. In 1996 he helped Khalid al Fawwaz, who participated in the 1998 African embassy terror attacks, set up a press office for bin Laden in London. Among his associates is Saad Rashed Mohammed al-Fagih, whose own radio program, Sawt al-Islah (Voice of Reform), returned to the airwaves on July 7 from the same Eutelsat satellite used by Radio al-Tajdeed. Al- Fagih was declared a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by the U.S. Department of State in December 2004. In fact, the widely reported declaration of responsibility for the London terror strike by the "Secret Organization of al Qaeda in Europe" was posted on Al-Qalah (The Castle), which is run by al-Fagih. Another close associate of al-Massari is Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed, who runs al-Muhajiroun (The Immigrants), an extremely vocal group in London and New York City that advocates international jihad for "the worldwide domination of Islam" and declared the UK "immune" from Islamist terror. Richard Reid, the Trans-Atlantic shoe bomber, and Zacarias Moussaoui, widely believed to have been the 20th September 11 hijacker, were members of the group. Authorities in Pakistan, according to local press reports, have detained and are interrogating Zeeshan Siddique, a 25-year old British national, as a possible link to Thursday's attack. Siddique is reportedly a member of al-Muhajiroun. Both al-Fagih and Bakri Mohammed have appeared on Radio al-Tajdeed programs. Unlike so many others, I guess I`m still a happy BBC listener. I was never one to sit and listen to them for hours on end, but I certainly listened every day, and usually several times a day --- and still do. The only thing that jarred me into action with their last series of cuts, was the loss of the science shows each evening. I knew there were several other airings, but I wasn`t sure when, so I sent for their program and frequency guides. When they came, I checked out every single listing, and here`s what I found out. I found 14 times when the science series was scheduled for a target area, but with no transmitters on the air. I found seven more times when it was on frequencies I couldn`t receive. Finally I found four times when it was on frequencies I *could* receive: BBC WEEKDAY SCIENCE SERIES – Frequencies heard in western NY state 1400 15485 15565 17640 1600 15400 17830 21470 1900 9410 2200 15400 Of course, all these are for Europe and Africa, so reception isn`t always the best, but at least I can listen to them (Pete Bentley, E Aurora NY, July 3, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U K [non]. BBC SEEKS AID TO MOUNT TV CHALLENGE TO AL-JAZEERA THE BBC is calling for government assistance to create a 24-hour World Service Arabic television news channel to challenge al-Jazeera. Yesterday's attacks in London have made the creation of a channel trusted to deliver impartial news to Middle East viewers — estimated to cost £25 million a year — more urgent, BBC executives said. Distrust of Western news suppliers in the Arabic world since the Iraq invasion is beginning to subside. The World Service will release figures today showing that its global audience increased last year by three million to 149 million listeners. The World Service is now the biggest speech radio station in Iraq, where its weekly audiences have increased to 3.3 million (22 per cent of the radio audience) from 1.8 million (13 per cent) last year. Independent surveys show that 43 per cent of opinion formers in Iraq listen to the service every week. The increase follows the rapid establishment of BBC FM relays in key areas, including Baghdad, Mosul, Kirkuk and Basra. In Afghanistan, the BBC attracted 2.8 million listeners in five provinces it surveyed. Its Pashto and Persian services in Kabul had a 60 per cent reach. Surveys showed that in markets including Egypt, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia and the US the World Service is regarded as the most objective international broadcaster compared with its main competitors. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office asked the BBC to develop plans for an Arabic World Service television service. But Nigel Chapman, director of the World Service, said that the Government grant-in-aid that funds the operation, set for £239 million next year, is not sufficient to cover the start-up costs of a new channel. "We know there is a demand for a trusted, impartial news provider in the Middle East," he said. "Satellite and cable take-up is galloping away in the region, challenging radio. It is a matter of urgency that we have a combined television and online news presence." The Foreign Office has declined to provide additional funds for the channel, but negotiations are continuing. Mr Chapman said: "£25 million a year is pretty good value for money, given the benefits it will bring to the BBC brand." The World Service broadcasts in 43 languages and is transforming itself from a shortwave radio broadcaster into a multimedia network. The BBC international news website recorded 324 million hits in March alone. Mandarin language broadcasts are regularly blocked in China, but aggressive marketing has won back listeners to the World Service in India. Rolling coverage of yesterday's attacks replaced normal English-language programmes on the World Service. Mr Chapman said: "Like our coverage of the tsunami and other emergencies it showed the value of reliable, impartial news delivered in a sober tone." Re: Allan Weiner Worldwide, WBCQ, July 2 2005 at 0000 --- Well, when I was trying it and posted that, the "play" button would never work. It appeared to load a zero-length file, I think. But, anyway, the issue is moot. That AWWW program WAS repeated on-air, on 7415 in the 2100 UT hour before WoR on 2200 UT Wednesday. It was NOT particularly obscene or profanity-laden, despite the description posted here. However, there WAS a one-minute blank at about 2130 UT; it's possible that there was a particularly vulgar spurt of speech right then that was edited out of the recording when AW thought better of it. I found it an admirably libertarian rant, interestingly combining a paranoid sense of impending government oppression with a disparaging contempt for some of the traditional SW-talk-show paranoia like the chemtrails conspiracies, etc. What surprised me was the strongly Christian slant to much of AW's diatribe. I knew he was Jewish in heritage, and thought that he was also in personal religious belief, but his imagery and references to the divine were explicitly Christian in nature. I did miss the very start of the repeat broadcast, but he seemed to be amping-up his tirade during what I heard, so I believe that I didn't miss any really outrageous comments. What really amused me was his conviction that his broadcasts, especially this specific AWWW opinion program, are carefully monitored by the faceless government jackbooted-thugs and that they'd be coming to get him down the line. This I really doubt. 73, (Will Martin, MO, July 9, dxld yg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. Was still dead later in that hour when I re- checked. I thought that would have been Bro Stair; he (or a recording) WAS on-air at that time via WWRB on 5085 with a current-topic commentary on the London bombings. Amusingly, he had a heck of a time pronouncing "Netanyahu", to whom he referred repeatedly, claiming that the Israelis and the British authorities knew of the bombings in advance. Speaking of pronunciation, I heard the WYFR "mailbag" program later in which the female co-host insisted on repeatedly pronouncing Eritrea as "err-rit-ree-ah" instead of "er-it-ray-a". I always wonder what listeners in the target countries whose language is so mangled by English-speaking radio announcers think of this. Might make them mad, though I guess WYFR's listeners are expected to be forgiving... :-) I know that *I* get infuriated when so many BBC announcers mis-pronounce "apartheid" as "apart-hate" -- I consider it totally unprofessional embedded editorializing (and also so outdated as to be idiotic). 73, (Will Martin, MO, July 9, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. I still have the DX-398, and there are some things I really like it for, but it has two serious problems. The audio is quite mushy, and on SW you really need those high audio frequencies. Also, its not near as sensitive as the 375; it needs a lot more antenna for the weak signals. I hate to run around, shopping and comparing, whether it`s cars, radios or clothes. So I just ran down to my Radio Shack, and came home with a Grundig E-10, and I`m happy. It`s just like the DX-375, but with a few more bells and whistles. One thing that particularly turns me on is the antenna trimmer. I`m sure most receivers these days automatically match the antenna to the front end and the tuned frequency. They just put that knob on for old timers like me. It still gives us a good feeling to twist a knob back and forth, and actually peak up the signal (Pete Bentley, E Aurora NY, July 3, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Know what you mean (gh, DX-398 and FRG-7 user) $12.99 RADIO AT TARGET In the latest DXLD , there is mention of Target (a USA chain store) selling shortwave radios. He wanted to tell me he submitted a 10-page comment filing to the FCC all about IBOC and its problems etc, and the problems associated with the FCC receiving information only from engineers that are "for" IBOC and the public's money being spent for all these NPR stations to buy IBOC equipment --- he was pretty hot about it. He told me there was some pretty harsh language and he said himself that this was even "more wrathful" than he usually is. It's in reference to docket number 99-325. His comments are at the top of the list if you search for comments on docket number 99-325. Here is the url to his comments. http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/ecfs/retrieve.cgi?native_or_pdf=pdf&id_document=6518005579 If you visit http://www.wrathofkahn.org he's urging anyone to please comment right away because the deadline is July 11th. Makes for some very interesting eye-opening reading. We also talked some more about Cam-D and all the newest developments. He also said that Ralph Carlson in Salt Lake City at Cam-D station KDYL is indeed planning on going full stereo very shortly and that they've changed over to the "MOYL" format from "Adult Standards". So anyone with a radio capable of receiving Kahn AM Stereo will be able to hear KDYL 1060 in stereo very soon. He urged me and anyone else to please comment on that docket before July 11th. Go Uncle Leonard! (Michael n WYO Richard, July 8, ABDX via DXLD) DRM +++ UNDER-USED SPECTRUM Rogaerial remarked on Steven carter's reference to "Under used" spectrum. he was referring to the coveted area from 2 megs up to 5 megs, which has much under used areas that could easily be used as a parking band for DRM transmissions. This has been mooted for many years, about time a regulator commented on it in public. The military and travel (shipping and aviation) have huge tracts of HF that they don't really need now, evidenced by the migration of both to higher frequencies. I imagine that the advent of DRM onto the lower HF bands will be unpopular for DXers struggling to hear low power stations in outer Patagonia and Tibet, but such a minority hobby isn't really the best use of the frequencies if we are honest. I speak as a long time DXer. Quasi national broadcasting is best served by LW or HF transmissions - 5 - 10 kW will be fine for national coverage using vertical incidence transmissions. This is a long term development, and will depend on rapid dissemination of suitable receivers. As with all things, don't hold your breath, or take down your aerials just yet! (Paul Rusling, July 6, BDXC-UK via DXLD) Re: UK: Ofcom Chief Executive enthusiastic over DAB/DRM chipset DRM is considering using 26 MHz for local services and there already are some transmissions there. VT Communications ran tests from Moosbrun to the UK on 9 and 11 MHz in conjunction with Virgin Radio, Asian Sound, Classic Gold, Premier Christian Radio and Christian Vision. Results were very good in the target area and were demonstrated at the London Digital Radio show last month when the DAB/DRM chip was launched. Ofcom mentioned the possibility of using medium wave in the long term for local DRM services in their report Radio - Preparing for the Future released this year and identified the medium wave frequencies which could be used (Mike Barraclough, ibid.) However, I don't have the knowledge of everything like you do... and I was wondering if you may be able to help me. My question deals with reception in the Great Lakes, specifically Lake Michigan since it's the area I deal with all the time. First, I'm curious if this could simply be identified as tropo or a separate type of DX. Bruce Elving once told me a more specific name for it - which I have since forgotten. My curiosity led me to do a rather informal study over the period of about two years that led to the conclusion that at least in my town, cross-lake stations in Milwaukee, Green Bay, and around Chicago are received based on elevation mainly, at least on a regular basis as compared to the obvious regional enhancement that happens often here in the summer. Many stations from 115-145 miles away will pop up when driving through certain areas, which I found were mainly above 755 feet in elevation, depending on the station. We are the highest point in our region as nothing south, east, or west of us is higher (yet going north, it continues to climb). There have been times when I have been driving from Cadillac, Michigan (at 1350 feet, the highest around) and have managed to keep in Chicago and Milwaukee stations 150-200 miles away all the way to Grand Rapids, a few hours south running parallel along the lake. Once the elevation drops though, these stations disappear. I am reluctant to call even this a form of tropo. It acts more like extended groundwave. We usually get the same stations in strong every few days or so (sometimes more often), many of them from 115 miles away that will drown out any station on each side of the frequency (100.7 WKKV regularly fills 100.5 and 100.9 despite being from 115 miles away right on the lake). I'm just curious if you have any insight into how signals work along the lakeshore, what effects them, and how elevation may come into play in this. There are days where we regularly receive a station 250 miles away that is of higher elevation, likely helped as the signal can bounce across the lake part of the way. I have used all the knowledge I know while studying this... and have reached a dead end...! I'm 23, so my experience is far less than most DXers, yet even many of the well-known WFTDA guys can't help me so much on this one... Some of my informal findings of terrain and lakeshore reception can be found at my site: http://www.beaglebass.com/dx_fm_index.htm (Chris Kadlec, Fremont Michigan, July 9, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi Chris, Very interesting. I have only taken a quick look at your website so far, and it will take a while to study it. It seems to me that you are dealing with ducting. Probably because of prevailing tropospheric conditions, ducts habitually form at a certain elevation or range of elevations. The same kind of thing happens on a much greater scale between Hawaii and California. Don`t know if you are familiar with Sheldon Remington`s DX, from a certain elevation up the volcano on the Big Island. Pulls in southern California and even Mexican coastal FM stations. The same thing happens the other way around, again at certain elevations along the coast, but the trouble is the band is full of locals. Hope this is of some help... 73, (Glenn to Chris, via DXLD) For those of you in the Great Lakes, there is some excellent regional enhancement so far this evening... although here only cross-lake. I've got every frequency on the dial from 88 through 107 totally packed right now as well as every channel 2 to 20 full (including some from Chicago I haven't seen in *years*) - every station from Chicago (135 miles) to Milwaukee (100 miles) and north to Green Bay in perfect or near perfect, most so good that they wipe out the frequencies on both sides of them, usually local stations. As for actual long-distance DX here -- none in sight (Chris Kadlec, Fremont, Michigan, July 9, amfmtvdx via DXLD) GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL EXPECTED MF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS 1.) Dropping indices numbers are better. 2.) For medium frequencies a solar flux under 150, under 100 better, 70 is best for E layer multi hop. Keep in mind though that the 10.7 cm (2800 mhz) solar flux index is not a "reliable" gauge of ionization in our atmosphere for F layer MF frequency refractions, as the energy of photons at this frequency is to low on the order of one million times. However most are used to solar flux and sunspot number and it's a hard habit to break. A better indicator is the background x-ray flux. See #7 below. 3.) Solar flux of at least 100 for E valley-F layer ducting mechanism. 4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, under 7 for several days consecutively is best. 5.) Previous 3 hour Kp index under 3 for mid latitude paths, under 2 for high latitude paths, 0-1 for several days consecutively is best. 6.) Energetic protons no greater then 10 MeV (10+0) for 160/120 meters and no greater then (10-1) on MF broadcast band. 7.) Background x-ray flux levels less than C1 for several days consecutively for 160/120 meters and less then B9 for MF broadcast band, A9 or less is best. 8.) No current STRATWARM alert. 9.) IMF Bz with a (positive number) sign, indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path auroral absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of MF RF signals, when the Kp is above 3. 10.) A -50 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the Equatorial Ring Current (Thomas Giella, July 7, ABDX via DXLD) ###
