Hey Glenn, I hear for the second day, station on 6915 from 1720 UT, the best audio at 1750 with talks in Mandarin and nice music. I think KNLS?? Signal off at 1758. Good signal, matts noise, sinpo 43222. Best with the AOR 7030 +LW 25 and 100m. +mfj1026. Gr, 73 (Maurits Van Driessche from Belgium, Nov 16, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Yes, must be KNLS as scheduled; no one else there (gh, DXLD) ** ALBANIA. On 6110, Nov 16 at 2247 I tuned in to some vocal music accompanied by bass strumming; maybe there were other instruments but this modulation was very muffled and had no highs. Good strength signal and not much interference, so quite a shame that R. Tirana`s Albanian service to Europe (and onward to NAm) via Shijak does not provide normal quality modulation. At 2255 into anthem without announcement, until 2256:30 and carrier off a minute later. Much better modulation during Spanish news at 2306 on 7210, which according to subsequent HFCC lookup is CRI Cërrik relay, Albania, Sounds like the customer gets the better facility than the home folks. Official target for this is Spain at local midnight, so if it just happens to carry onward at 280 degrees to the Caribbean where 7210 is in an exclusive amateur radio band, who can complain? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Same programming pattern tonight, but the carrier left the air already after about ten seconds. I would describe the audio as telcom-like, hardly better than telephone quality. A few days ago I noted the same with TWR Polish 1600-1630 on 7355, here it was especially obvious since one could compare with // Tbilisskaya on 5940 (which was about two seconds behind Shijak). In addition to the already poor audio the 6110 transmission tonight was also accompanied by quite loud mains hum. It appeared to get louder in pauses, as if an AGC sucked it up, but I could not make out this for sure. Other reports indicated possible audio level problems at Shijak. They indeed appeared to be there, but I can't tell for sure here either, since reception suffered considerably from much stronger Skelton (carrying NHK) on 6115. On the earlier check also the TWR transmission on 7355 was disturbed by stronger China on 7350. Not much luck with shortwave transmissions from Shijak here at present. No customer but the operator of the Cërrik site where RTSH has apparently no rights whatsoever for the next 15 or so years (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Nov 17, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ARGENTINA. R. Bulgaria is really having problems. Nov 16 at 2218 I found a good signal in English on 7500, but barely modulated. Had to turn the volume way up to make it out, and if I were to tune up or down to US stations on 7520, 7490 without turning it down first, would have my eardrums blasted out. // 5800 was better modulated, but still quite a bit below normal. When this happens one wonders if an old modulator tube is about to die, or whether someone simply isn`t watching the levels going into and out of the transmitter. And whether anyone at the station cares about how it sounds to the listener, without whom the whole thing is pointless (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BURKINA FASO. RTB, 5030, French talk at 0637 Nov 17, overriding Defunct Gene Scott, TIRWR, Costa Rica. Amazingly, the two were only about 6 Hz from each other, indicating remarkable frequency control on the part of both of them, or equally remarkable coincidence (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) BF 5030 --- Everyone else seemed to be picking it up again after its absence, now returned for me over the last 2 nights, not as good as it was in strength though. Nice to hear (Mark Thomas Davies, Anglesey UK, Nov 16, BDXC-UK via DXLD) ** CANADA. Glenn, CBC NQ [9625] disappeared at about 2230 on 13 Nov. They were playing music by a Manitoban musician and suddenly the signal disappeared. Perhaps they are having transmitter problems. Reception is pathetic tonight anyway. 73/Liz (Liz Cameron, Detroit MI, UT Nov 14, ibid.) Re previous report that CBCNQ had disappeared from 9625 at 2230, I looked for it Nov 16 at 2255, and could not pull it out between two REE signals on 9620 and 9630; when both were gone at 2257, however, CBC Radio 1 was mentioned as some program was wrapping up. Usual poor signal here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) see also CUBA Where did CBCNQ 9625 go? Last time I detected with classical music was last Friday night (0330z) and no trace of it for last week end while trying to pick up Randy's Vinyl Tap at 0100 and Sat. Night Blues Special at 0400. No Jazz Beat on Sunday, nor these last days. I can't blame conditions. Has someone heard it recently? (Raul Saavedra, Costa Rica, Nov 16, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) I heard them at 2300 today, but haven't tried later. I wonder if they have turned 9625 off in the evening to accommodate Radio República on 9630. I've asked more than once how you are hearing that vs jamming between 0200-0500? Propagationally, CBCNQ should go down to 49m or even lower at night. Years ago they were on 6065, I think, when they had access to two transmitters, 11720 in daytime. 73, (Glenn, ibid.) But still registered: 9625 1200-0615 zones 2-4 SAC 100 348 (Wolfgang Büschel, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Another check of 9625 for CBC NQ: Nov 17 at 2306, a poor signal there in non-French language. Can`t find a program sked for this online, tho I have seen them on paper in previous seasons. The only thing I can find on the CBC website is this merely mentioning the frequency 9625: http://www.cbc.ca/frequency/shortwave.html (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHINA [non]. BTW, CRI in English has been inbooming tonight at 0300 on 9690sp. Radio Havana Cuba announced on the DXer's show that they were to start using the new frequency of 6180 at 0000 UT on the 15th of November UT. I checked at 0000 and found a strong signal SIO 444 in Spanish. At 0100, checking again for the English broadcast I found a carrier with no audio. Finally at 0117 the audio was present with a program interview about the Havana City Foundation, a group dedicated to the preservation of the old city of Havana founded originally in November of 1519. Another example of someone forgetting to push the right button, a frequent problem at RHC. The signal was still a strong 444. This is the best reception of RHC I have had in some time. 6000 is always interfered with by stations on either side of the 6000 kc frequency, and 9820 is usually not audible (Steve Cross, Del City OK, Sangean 505, wire anternna, DX LISTENING DIGEST) RHC has finally made its move from 9820 to 6180, Nov 16 at 0645 check, VG signal on 6180, but not enough to completely blot out Brasília. Ignoring a 250 kW transmitter in the same hemisphere is not a sign of astute frequency management. Furthermore, RHC now impedes reception of R. Educación, 6185, México DF, which already has other co- and adjacent QRM problems, but had been relatively clear at certain lucky hours. Actually as I was tuning down toward 6180 I heard RHC first on 6300! That`s a new mixing product, leapfrog 6060 over 6180, as RHC causes more damage (there could be a match on 5940 [and 6060 over 6000 would also land on 5940!]). There are now three intentional RHC frequencies in English all evening on 49m, supposedly for different parts of NAm, while one would do the trick, and not cause so much collateral damage to other broadcasters trying to funxion on crowded 49m this winter. If RHC really needs to run three antennas at different azimuths, they should put them and three transmitters to go with them, on one frequency, such as 6000. BTW, the idea that only 49m will propagate is not true either, as RHC on 11760 was still quite well heard at this late hour. Altho B-season changes have apparently belatedly gone into effect, RHC Spanish is still on 13750, not 15370 as Arnie Coro`s sked showed, Nov 16 at 1339 check and also about an hour later. R. Rebelde 11655 was also very good at the same time (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA [non]. Re 6-170: I wonder if anyone further east, or south is hearing the new R. República relay via Sackville, 9630 at 02-05 UT which was supposed to start tonight. No sign of it here (nor NQ 9625) around 0300, but northerly signals just aren`t propagating. Spain direct barely audible on 9620. Are you hearing both 9625 and 9630 in Costa Rica, Raúl? (Glenn, OK, UT Nov 14, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi Glenn: I'm hearing it here in upstate NY, but a lot of signal is flying right over us. It's about an S6 or S7 signal on the E1 with A/D Sloper. Lots of fading and a signal bothered considerably by atmospheric noise especially when in the rather deep but usually quite short fades. Nonetheless, I can follow the program and speech for the most part (John Figliozzi, Halfmoon, NY, ibid.) see also CANADA CUBA JAMMING CANADA --- Sackville, that is, now that it is broadcasting Radio República at 02-05 UT Tue-Sat on 9630. Just checked Nov 16 at 0200 and all I hear is jamming, but two nights ago Sackville 9630, and the NQ Service on 9625, were inaudible here tho others in eastern NAm could hear RR. The jamming now is much weaker than RHC on 9550, however. I wonder how 9630 is doing in various parts of ENAm, especially S Florida, and on into the Caribbean and Central America -- - is RR on top of the jamming anywhere? [Curt Deegan and Jeff White in S Florida say RR is loud and clear, no jamming audible there. If the jammers skip over S Florida, they are also skipping over most of Cuba, effectiveness limited to groundwave.] Tsk, tsk, Canadá and Cuba were such good friends, and now look what they`ve gone and done (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Viz.: Hi Glenn, From here in Northwest GA all I can hear is the jamming. 73's (John Hunter, Rossville GA, 0246 UT Nov 16, ABDX via DXLD) Radio República 9630 kHz loud and clear here at 0300Z, Nov 16, 2006, no signs of reported jamming, even during a totally silent period of OC (W. Curt Deegan, Boca Ratón, (southeast) Florida, USA [Ten-Tec RX- 320D; LF Engineering H-800], HCDX via DXLD) Glenn: Just before 0300 UT, I was listening to RR on 9630 with a booming signal here in Miami. No sign of the jamming here (Jeff White, UT Nov 16, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Solar-terrestrial indices for 15 November follow. Solar flux 96 and mid-latitude A-index 6. The mid-latitude K-index at 0300 UTC on 16 November was 5 (70 nT). Space weather for the past 24 hours has been minor. Geomagnetic storms reaching the G1 level occurred. Space weather for the next 24 hours is expected to be minor. Geomagnetic storms reaching the G1 level are expected (SEC via DXLD) Last night around 0300Z 11/16, I listened for the reported Cuban jamming against Radio República on 9630 kHz. No jamming was heard even though it easily is on other Cuban jammed channels from MW through SW day and night, here in SE Florida. I'll have to listen again to see if I can pick it up. However, just after TOH there was a minute or so of open carrier during which there was a brief fade out then back in to the original strong level heard before TOH. When audio resumed mention of Radio Miami International was made followed by the resumption of Radio República programming. I assume facilities changes at the broadcast site necessitated the brief TOH drop of the 9630 signal, though no difference in it was noted following the few seconds interruption. The following is from the RMI web site as translated by Babel Fish: --- Schedule of Republica Radio: Daily 1:00-3:00 a.m. hour of Miami in 9955 kHz (31 meters) Monday through Friday 6:00-8:00 a.m. hour of Miami in 9955 kHz (31 meters) Daily 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. hour of Miami in 9955 kHz (31 meters) Monday through Friday 6:00-11:00 p.m. hour of Miami in 5970 kHz (relief via overseas) Monday through Friday 9:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. hour of Miami in 9630 kHz (foreign relief) Saturday and Sunday 10:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. hour of Miami in 9955 kHz (31 meters) --- The distinction is noted between (relief via overseas) for the 5970 kHz broadcasts and (foreign relief) for the reported 9630 kHz Sackville broadcasts -- Canada is foreign to US but not overseas, while European locations would be overseas (W. Curt Deegan, Boca Ratón, (southeast) Florida, Nov 16, HCDX via DXLD) R. República, 6135 via Rampisham UK, Nov 16 at 2245 G with no jamming audible. Altho this 22-24 transmission has been in effect at least since April, it is still missing from HFCC B-06, so is apparently Top Secret as far as VT Merlin is concerned. Ditto 00-02 on 7205 and 02-04 on 7110. I assume the lack of jamming has nothing to do with the lack of registration, as the DentroCuban Jamming Command has hit it before, and the last I checked was also jamming the 7 MHz channels. Could it be that Cuba`s jamming capacity is getting spread too thin, so they have to make hard choices? Surely the priority número uno is Radio Martí. Then I tuned in 5970 at 2259 and found open carrier already with DentroCuban jamming as R. República via Germany started up at 2300 with Radio Miami Internacional ID, and half a minute later R. República opening and into ``¡Despierta, Cuba!`` Well above the jamming here. Note: WRMI is not the same as Radio Miami Internacional. RMI brokers programming on various other transmitters, and also runs the SW station in Miami, WRMI, whose call letters apply only to broadcasts from there on 9955 or 7385. I also listened for REE in French to Europe at local midnight, as supposedly scheduled already on 5970 at 2300, but could not hear it in the mix, altho the same to NAm was inbooming on 6055 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 5970 2300-0400 11 WER 125 285 Mon-Fri 291006 250307 D RMI DTK (Wolfgang Büschel, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Not exactly the same kind of case but similar: Family Radio Worldwide is much larger station than just WYFR. 73, (Mauno Ritola, Finland, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. The Dentro Cuban Jamming Command`s spurs have not been eliminated. I was again hearing clix, spurious from 15330, on 15380, Nov 17 at 1440, but not at any of the other multiples of 50 kHz from 15330. A bit of Cuban jamming was audible on 9515, Nov 17 at 2303, a frequency which Martí apparently used only briefly last season and never appeared on schedules. Just in case. No jamming at this hour on 9565, still used by RM but earlier in the day (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA [non]. Re R. Choices, choices from HCJB, Nov 17 at 2255. 11920 was in their indigenous Kulina language toward that tribe in Brasil at 126 degrees, but G here where it has very few speakers. Preferred 12000 which had the Spanish service playing some nice Andean music; however, was cut off abruptly at 2259* without any announcement. I knew they were switching to 11700 so tuned there quickly and heard the opening ID from 2259:30 claiming they were on 11720 instead. BTW, 11720 had an open carrier from something for the next few minutes (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** EGYPT. I was not expecting to hear anything, checking R. Nov 16 at 1448, Cuban music on 11675 --- could it be Cuba? Not so strong, but then lyrix mentioned Puerto Rico instead; 1453 very brief announcement, language unknown, into African hilife music. Quickly found // 13690. The only match for these in HFCC is RFI`s Pashto service at 1430-1530 on both via Issoudun. However both went off abruptly at 1500* without announcement. No, the B-06 RFI schedule shows these very two frequencies are in Persian at 1430-1500 only: http://www.rfi.fr/radiofr/statiques/pmo-asie_hiver2006-2007.pdf And no Pashto service is even mentioned on SW. BTW, this same grid is the one which does show the English frequency 5920 at 1400-1500, under Near/Middle East/Asia, which I missed before in 6-170 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) RFI English at 1400: all I hear is fading and hum on 5920 with a preacher, WBOH in NC. *Terrible* sig. Best for me is 1600 on 11615 and 15160. RFI English, all quite good here; a few go over the half hour: 0400 7315 9805 7220 0500 9805 11995 13680 0600 7315 11995 13680 (Bob Thomas, Bridgeport CT, Nov 13, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GABON. ANO harmonic, 19160, Nov 16 at 1349 buzz with some audio mixing; both were stronger at 1451 recheck, peaking 7 over S9. Africa Numéro Un, Moyabi, 9580 was a huge blob of buzz with traces of modulation, also bothering adjacent channels, Nov 16 at 2255 check and still going when I quit at 2307. This is not jamming, but something very wrong with their own transmitter, and has been going on for many days now, also sounding the same on harmonic 19160 when it propagate. How can their engineers be unaware of this, when any casual listener tuning in the station can`t help but notice it, and indeed is prevented from listening to the station because of it? Maybe they don`t have any engineers worthy of the title on staff, just people to turn the equipment on and off. ANO, 19160, big buzz and a little modulation, Nov 17 at 1448. I`m just pleased with evidence that 19+ MHz is still propagating so reliably over such a distance. Wish some more Africans would beef up their harmonics, preferably with good modulation (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Glenn, as I have pointed out few days ago, the same buzz comes around when RTV Gabon 4777 goes on the air at 0500, and no one else seems to have noticed that. Least thing I do is invite you to give a listen. Only thing left would be they have solved the problem while I’m passing along this invitation (Raúl Saavedra, Costa Rica, Nov 16, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Intend to check this, but usually not till after 0600. My local noise level on 60m makes it hard to pick out the buzz (Glenn Hauser, ibid.) I've also noted the buzz on 4777 past few days between 1600-1700 when R Gabon is on. So there is a possibility that R Gabon 4777 is transmitted via ANO facilities. I don't know if the buzz is generated by transmitter or if it is an audio feed circuit problem. In the latter case both ANO and R Gabon may be using same feed circuit/master control to feed their transmitters. Couple of months ago, when R Gabon appeared on 4777, I checked the 1700 sign-off times of 4777 and 15475. ANO 15475 used to turn off the transmitter just prior 1700 for a while and return then with weaker signal. Maybe antenna change. Interesting was that R Gabon 4777always was turned off at almost the same time as 15475 (few seconds apart). Some years ago R Gabon was listed using ANO transmitter on 4777. I wonder if the situation is same again. 73 (Jari Savolainen, Kuusankoski, Finland, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) [in reply to José Miguel Romero and his recording of this:] He escuchado tu captación y se trata EXACTAMENTE de la misma señal. Another check of ANO harmonic, 19160, found it still propagating as late as 2238 UT Nov 17, mostly buzz but a little unintelligible modulation. Same as on much stronger fundamental 9580 checked at 2303. BTW I then also heard some intermittent buzzing, only, of a different sort, on 17630, probably unrelated, but it is an ANO frequency much earlier in the day (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GERMANY. Re DW, 6185, ``Was it weak enough to have been a leapfrog mix? Here`s what I come up with. DW Wertachtal is on 6075 at that time in German, and in DRM on 6130, which would make a leapfrog onto 6185; but could a DRM signal make such a mix with an analog? (gh)`` Thanks for your suggestions Glenn. The signal I heard on 6185 has not reappeared - at least, not at the same time (0815). It was of fair strength only and mixing with CVC. No, there was nothing out of Germany on 5965. I disregarded the DRMer on 6130, while 6140 is in English. It would be very interesting to know if an analogue and a digital signal could cause such a mix onto another frequency. 73 (Noel R. Green (NW England), dxldyg via DXLD) Don't think so. A carrier on 6130 would have to heterodyne with 6075, the mixing product on 55 kHz again heterodynes with 6130, producing a signal on 6185. But what can happen when there is no carrier on 6130, instead a digital signal with its HF energy equally spread over the 6125...6135 range? I guess the result would be some noise blob around 6185, probably fluctuating in strength with the audio 6075 gets amplitude-modulated with, but this would not be an intelligible kind of modulation for lack of a defined carrier. Wild speculation: Could it have been Skelton or Woofferton, rehearsing for the new year? (Kai Ludwig, Germany, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GERMANY [non]. AIR Sinhala service, 9820, Nov 16 at 1322 dominant as usual with S Asian vocal music; during a brief pause at 1324 I could make out something underneath, presumably China (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GREECE [and non]. Glenn: As you may have noticed from my reception reports for The Voice of Greece, 9420 in the 31-meter band comes in fine when I start monitoring it at 2000 UT. By the time the North American service starts at 0000 UT it has gone in this area -- maybe propagation problems; perhaps they are fooling around with the antenna which is supposed to be at an azimuth of 323 degrees. At the present time, I am busy copying and pasting the GRC ERA ERA registrations from the HFCC B-06 data-base. They have switched some of the frequencies from Kavala to Avlis, other ex-Kavala frequenciess are still there with Avlis locations. The 35-kW frequency is still there under THE plus other THE locations. Most of the Delano and Greenville frequencies still exist -- maybe they are trying to make a deal with VOA to resume the Greek service; they could move the satellite station from Kavala to Avlis. Perhaps they may even move two of those VOA-donated 250-kW transmitters to Thessaloniki and broadcast from there. They may even be planning to put three of those transmitters in Avlis into service to replace the ones they lost when Kavala closed. All this is up to the politicians who control the purse strings, and the planning department at ERA IF they get the money. Regards, (John Babbis, Silver Spring, MD, DX LISTENING DIGEST) John, yes, I also noticed they still had Delano and Greenville in HFCC, but don`t get your hopes up. A lot easier to leave old wooden registrations on the books in the very unlikely event they might be needed, than to remove them and put a nail in the coffin. 73, (Glenn to John, via DXLD) Glenn: I took the schedule that Babis Charalampopoulos sent me for the Voice of Greece for B06 and made up an actual operating schedule as shown below. WORLDSPACE TO ABANDON EUROPE Summary of the enclosed item: Worldspace will shut off the current services on Afristar's western beam on Nov 30 2007 and use this capacity for some other services, aiming at Italy and incompatible with the existing system. This means that all Worldspace receivers flying around here in Europe will be scrap by then. Five years ago Worldspace was here in Germany a quite popular toy amongst DXers (in particular the young, technology-orientated geeks of course), with an obvious sign being a dedicated website www.afristar.de which went away by yearend 2004. As well-known Worldspace went encrypted in the meantime, effectively killing the DXer's interest in the system, probably also because they now have a new toy to play with (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Nov 16, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Viz.: -----Original Message----- Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2006 07:47:49 +0100 Subject: [A-DX] (SatelliFax) WorldSpace streicht Pay-Radio From: Herbert Meixner To: A-DX Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2006 19:32:07 +0100 From: SatelliFax Subject: SatelliFax Ausgabe Mittwoch, 15. There's a message on the Worldspace France site about this: Babelfish French to English translation: WorldSpace obtained an authorization in Italy to deploy a service of radio operator paying on a satellite and terrestrial hybrid network. This service will be operational at the beginning of 2008. It will use the North-western beam of Afristar with a new technology adapted to the hybrid networks: the ESDR. Consequently, the current bouquet of the North-western beam of Afristar will disappear as from November 30, 2007. Only some programs whose RFI could be received by the current terminals of WorldSpace on this beam. The current terminals of WorldSpace will not be able to receive the new Italian bouquet because this bouquet will be diffused in technology ESDR. WorldSpace thus stops the paying marketing of the current bouquet semi November 2006. The customers, who wish it, will be able to renew free their subscription with the current bouquet for one period active until the end of November 2007. For the other beams of our satellites there are no changes. To subscribe you with our services in these areas, connect on www.worldspace.com. Kenya could halt BBC broadcasts Foreign radio stations in Kenya may be prevented from broadcasting if reciprocal licences are not granted, a government minister has warned. The UK, US and China had all been put on notice, Assistant Information Minister Koigi wa Wamwere said. LIBERIA GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWN RADIO STATIONS FOR ALLEGED TAX DEFAULTING | Text of report by French news agency AFP Monrovia, 16 November: At least two Liberian independent radio stations, including the biggest and most popular Star Radio, went off air Thursday after authorities closed them down for alleged non- payment of taxes. Tax collecting agents from the ministry of finance escorted by the Liberian National Police stormed Star Radio ordering all employees out of the building before locking it up and posting police officers outside. Crystal FM was also similarly closed down, according to its station manager Francis Dahn. Tax officials could not immediately comment on the details of the taxes allegedly owed. Star Radio, which features news and current affairs programmes, resumed broadcasts in May last year after more than five years of interruption during the west African state's civil war. Run in partnership with the Swiss-based Hirondelle Foundation, which helped to launch the station in 1997, Star Radio broadcasts on FM and shortwave. Dr. Laurence Bropleh told Star Radio the action was solely a tax collection initiative and was not intended to muzzle the independent media. According to Dr. Bropleh, he negotiated with the Ministry of Finance to give the affected media institutions forty-eight hours to settle their arrears with government. Voice of Africa in Arabic again via transmitter in Sabrata: 0800-1155 on 15415 SAB 500 kW / 130 deg to CeAf, some days 0600/0700- 1155!!! (DX Mix News, Bulgaria, Nov 16 via DXLD) 15235 and 15415 Sabratha, Libya again ???? If you are listening at 1100 (I don't think Kai will be) there is an Arabic speaker on 15415 kHz since at least 0810 this Wednesday morning. The signal is up and down due to propagation. It's a very long winded, and at times animated, debate of some kind. I haven't listened continuously - only on the hour/half hour - and no break for an ID has been heard. This is an old Libya frequency (Noel R. Green-UK, wwdxc BC-DX Nov 15 via DXLD) Libyan Radio is on air again today (Thursday Nov. 16) at 0830 via both 15415 and 15235 (former Libyan frequencies) in Arabic. Thanks to Mauno Ritola and Jari Savolainen for their assistance. Wednesday they carried a loooooooong and sometimes animated debate from tune in 0815 til off at 1200. Today it seems to be something similar. Both are fairly good signals at my location but with some fading up and down. Audio quality is very good - much better than when I heard the last Sabrata transmitter in operation. So, is this a relay or has the Colonel invested in something new? 73 (Noel R. Green (NW England), dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) SABRATHA ???? 15415 stopped exact 1130 UT today Nov 16th. Signal has a very clean audio type, so my still guess is, transmission coming from somewhere else than SABRATHA Libya site !!!???? My first guess was, that MNO-VTC resumed RTA Algiers service via U.K. transmitters at Rampisham and Wooferton (wb, wwdxc BC-DX Nov 15/16) It was Jari Savolainen who heard an ID and frequencies - I missed it maybe due to a fade? Could Tarek be persuaded to listen I wonder? The ID apparently came around 1030. Transmission is still on-going, and 15415 \\ 15235 were both on air at 0735 tune in today. 15415 is stronger here than 15235. I'm not sure that France would propagate on 15 MHz as well as these two do at 0735. But the "fading" I'm noting makes me think they are not aiming at Europe. Yes, the audio quality sounds very good - much better than Sabrata 15415 used to do before it left the air for the last time. I've tuned around after 1200, but don't yet find the same transmission elsewhere on other frequencies. Possibly these transmitters carry the foreign language transmissions? This clip comes from the archives of the Polygoon Nieuws (through Beeldengeluid.com). The video opens with the antenna maintenance workers struggling with the windy environment on Bonaire. The only English you will hear on this clip will be from the voice of Jerry Cowan, and you will see and hear him give the "old-style" opening ID, "You are tuned to Radio Nederland, the Dutch World Broadcasting System in Hilversum, Holland." Later on, you'll see inside the Transworld Radio facilities' control room. At one time, the Happy Station used Transworld Radio's transmitter on 800 kHz for a program called "Happy Station 70", which was a special seventy minute version of the Happy Station made for the Caribbean. THE BIG NIGHT IN THE SATELLITE WORLD HAS ARRIVED The satellite world has been waiting a long time for tonight - over two years in fact. Tonight at 1200 UT Al-Jazeera commence their English language channel. David Frost (yes THE David Frost) who is only one of the big names that have joined the network interviews Tony Blair. How ironic - it is widely believed that Blair talked George Bush out of bombing the station's HQ in Doha some years ago. Funny enough, Foxtel is only one of the few pay TV networks in the world not taking the channel (apart from the USA) - but in fact Foxtel are broadcasting the signal, its just that the Foxtel receivers have the channel "hidden" from their subscribers. Over at my web site I give the details of how to view the hidden channel on a standard satellite receiver: http://www.satdirectory.com/--jazeeraeng.html Tonight about 80 million households will receive the channel which has headhunted countless staff from CNN, BBC and even Australia's Ten Network. At the moment a countdown clock is running on the channel, with only a little over 3 hours to the opening to the perhaps what will be the biggest launch in news television ever, its a shame Australia is so backward in adopting new media technologies like personal satellite television. While the rest of the world enjoys thousands of channels, most Australian's only see five channels on our TV sets. Oh well - you can see the screenshots in the next ADXN! Tovarishce de jem VK2JEM (Jem Cullen, Australia, ibid.) Jem Cullen makes a joking(?) reference to "marked persons" in connection with Al-Jazeera, but this touches on what I feel to be a legitimate question given the current political climate. Should we fear that contacting broadcasters in countries out of favor with the US government will get us placed on the TSA's notorious "no-fly" list or see us charged with treason, aiding terrorists, etc? I am sometimes tempted to write broadcasters to tell them their programs are being heard, but I'm concerned that doing so could lead to extraordinary rendition from the land of liberty. The schedule shows, 7 days a week, in EDT, whatever that means now, and UT, unshifted? --- 07:00A / Sun-1100...Family Radio - Spanish 08:00A / Sun-1200...Family Radio - English 09:00A / Sun-1300...Family Radio - English 07:00P / Sun-2300...Family Radio - Spanish 08:00P / Mon-0000...Family Radio - English Each of these is an hour long, except on Sundays the next show is at 1415, but I seriously doubt FR really runs an extra 15 minutes then. Since I heard FR at 1430+, the above UT have presumably shifted one hour later, i.e. 12-15 and 00-02 UT. According to FCC B-06, the switch times between 9265 and 13570 are 1300 and 2300, so 9265 would be carrying FR at 12-13 and 00-02, 13570 at 13-15 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A [non]. The 2006 Global Catholic Radio Conference made a tremendous impact in the lives of all who attended. EWTN & the CRA were blessed to have over 120 attendees registered for the conference this year. This is the largest attendance to date, and we look forward to growing in numbers and in strength every year. In writing about some of the highlights, we hope to convey to you at least a small portion of the power of the Word of God as presented by the spiritual leaders and speakers who formed and informed us over those four days in Birmingham, Alabama. Wed. Oct. 11, 2006: From that first afternoon’s tour of EWTN’s Radio Mountain Let the tour begin! We climbed aboard buses and enjoyed a scenic drive past highways and byways, then up a very steep and rocky mountain on a road that seemed an inauspicious entry to such holy ground. The studio was set securely atop this mountain and boasted an impressive array of high-tech equipment and obviously knowledgeable staff savvy enough to make it all work. We also found out later, as we were touring the facilities, that such huge equipment as the generators had to be brought up that same steep road via delivery truck --- back in the days when the road wasn’t even paved! The miracles that occur on that mountaintop are not all via satellite; some are very down-to-earth in the physical facilities. You really don’t have to have a lot of technical expertise in radio to see and appreciate that fact (RadioActive Messenger, Oct-Nov, Catholic Radio Association via DXLD) ** U S A. Preacher on 8765, Nov 16 at 1317, perfectly readable, except with some ute carrier cutting on and off every few seconds on the low side. Did not stay for ID, but from previous experience this is WNQM 1300 Nashville, mixing product with super-strong WWCR at the same site on 7465. I could barely hear the WWCR audio underneath on 8765. Seems to me there is some maritime station on 8765, but apparently they have not complained (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. NEWS DEPARTMENT AXED AT WRKO/BOSTON --- ENTERCOM Talk WRKO- A/BOSTON fires its entire news staff in a move that replaces the seven-member news department with outsourced local news and national news from FOX NEWS RADIO. Exiting WRKO [680] are News Dir. ROD FRITZ and anchors LISTO FISHER, PAUL TUTHILL, SHARON SMITH, MARGA BESSETTE, MARY BLAKE, and DEB DAIGLE (allaccess.com via Brock Whaley, Nov 16, DXLD) ** U S A. Homer, PBS and Ham Radio --- I was watching an episode of the Simpsons last night which was unusually brilliant. Homer is really into a bawdy BBC British comedy on PBS TV when they come on with one of their begathon appeals for money. Homer is really upset at the interruption. "Only $10,000 needed to make our goal for this hour. As soon as we get the $10,000 we'll return to our program." Light bulb goes on. Homer picks up the phone and pledges $10,000 he does not have. Homer settles back to watch the end of the show. A few days later the PBS Pledge Police show up at his door in a white van with a satellite uplink dish on the roof. They rough Homer up but he escapes to the sanctuary of Reverend Lovejoy's church. The good reverend smuggles Homer onto an airplane sending supplies to a missionary colony in the South Pacific. Lovejoy gives Homer a ham radio rig so Homer can keep in touch with Marge. The frequency shown on the digital dial of the transceiver is 21272.5, a legitimate 15 meter ham band frequency for the hop from Shelbyville [? Springfield - -- gh] to the South Pacific in times of better sunspots. Somebody in the Simpsons back room must be a ham and a fan of Britcoms on PBS. Harry Shearer? Anybody know? Monday evening (13 November) I was able to hear CJRC-1150 battling it out with CKOC-1150, both in the hash from WDFN. WRVA was not audible due to the IBOC hash. As I type this on 14 November at 1727 EST, CKOC is really having a tough time of getting around the hash, and I can't get anywhere near 1110-1140 kHz. There's also a second station under CKOC, but I can't rotate the rx to null out CKOC because of the IBOC hash from WDFN. This is the second station that's run IBOC 24 hours in the past couple of months, with WWJ-950 having done it a couple of months ago. (They've since shut it off at night, thankfully!) Take care, (Eric Berger, Detroit, MI, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** VATICAN. DRM on 7365-7380, Nov 16 at 2305, would be Vatican Radio in English to NAm, 60 kW at 310 degrees from SMG at 2300-2330. Must be strong enough to demodulate, and sure spreading beyond 10 kHz, nominal 7370 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** VATICAN [non]. RUSSIA, Winter B-06 schedule of Vatican Radio: 1330-1400 on 6110*SAM 250 kW / 058 deg in Russian * co-ch Brother Stair TOM + Voice of Azerbaijan in Azeri on 6110.8 (DX Mix News, Bulgaria, Nov 16 via DXLD) UNIDENTIFIED. Motor-boat-type jamming, lower pitched than e.g. Cuban, and all of the same pitch, heard on 6005, 6035 and 6065, Nov 16 at 1310. 6005 was bothering VOR in Japanese, unlikely a deliberate target. The three frequencies 30 kHz apart instantly suggest 6035 plus spurs, where the jamming is no doubt bad news for Bhutan, but BBS not likely targeted either. The only possibility appears to be BBCWS via Korea South on 6065, listed in HFCC beaming westward, but not on BBC`s schedule at http://www.bclnews.it/b06schedules/bbc.htm in Mandarin or any other language. A bit later, heard the same jamming sound on 7395, again with no known target. Perhaps there is a new clandestine that has shown up on some or all these frequencies. Is BBC Mandarin really on 6065? Not shown in the schedule after 2100 local or any other time, if this is up-to-date, at http://news.bbc.co.uk/chinese/simp/hi/schedules_and_frequencies/default.stm (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) UNIDENTIFIED. Best wishes from (Mike in West Sussex On the South Coast of the UK http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/thesecretsiteofmike/index.html HCDX via DXLD) A crummy alternative, in my opinion, is the HFCC database. I just downloaded mine for ERGO4 from their website. Sure wish ILG was back! (Walt Salmaniw, BC, ibid.) You can thank ILG in part for HFCC being `crummy` since Bernd Friedewald prevents his clients including Radio Australia from being included in HFCC. 73, (Glenn Hauser, ibid.) No kidding, Glenn? Dumm, dumm, dumm. Aren't you tired of such pettiness which in the end spoils it for everyone. Wish these guys would just grow up (Walt Salmaniw, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Sorry, but this HFCC public file does not list ALL stations. Bernd Friedewald prevents stations whose frequencies he manages, such as Radio Australia, from being included, and numerous Asian Broadcasting Union outlets are also censored out. Wolfgang Bueschel computes that 984 lines have been eliminated from the internal full document. Furthermore, a number of countries do not even bother to participate, notably Brasil with all its SW stations. By all means the file is a very useful reference, and I am constantly referring to it, but unfortunately it is far from complete and comprehensive. 73, (Glenn Hauser, OK, ODXA, via DXLD) ###
