I woke up early to try for this and was surprised to tune right into English ID "This is Radio Bana ... Splash from 7285 didn't make the reception easier. I think it a good idea to move away from that frequency, as intended by Ludo Maes (Finn Krone, Denmark, wwdxc BC-DX Feb 8 via DXLD) Samara site 250 kW 188 degrees (Wolfgang Büschel, ibid.) ** GABON [and non]. Afropop music distraxion: Feb 11 at 1508 was on 17660; Feb 12 at 1509 also on 17660, but with heavy flutter, in disturbed propagation conditions; however, ANU Moyabi on 17630 was steady as usual with no flutter, altho some CCI from Mali. This has happened on previous occasions, making one wonder if Afropop and ANU are really from the same site, with such different reception characteristics. One would expect the flutter to come over a much higher-latitude path. At this time on the 16m band I did not find any other signals with such flutter; among the normal ones checked were 17725 Libya/France, 17770 South Africa, 17830 Ascension, 17620 France, 17595 Spain, 17525 Greece. Sa`udi Arabia with Qur`an at 1525 had some flutter tho much stronger signals on 15435 // 15425 and so did a weak signal from DW in German on 15275. Then at 1529 I noticed VOA News Now on 17895 had similar flutter to 17660. Sites for these: 15275 Rwanda, 17895 Botswana, certainly neither of them hi-latitude. Afropop on 17660 went off at 1531* as usual after a semiminute of dead air. During this time I had the BFO on and noted that not only was there a flutter in the amplitude of the signal, but also in the frequency, which I believe is attributed to Doppler effect in the unstable ionosphere. Perhaps the amplitude flutter can be explained by the azimuth of these particular transmissions, not directly toward us, but going north towards a disturbed area of the ionosphere, and part or most of the signal being scattered back toward us? 15275 is 30 degrees, and 17895 is 350 degrees per HFCC. Who knows what on 17660, but it should be somewhere in that area if it`s aimed from Gabon toward Libya as jammer/distraxion. 17630 is missing from the latest HFCC, but previously was shown as 307 degrees, which is more favorable for NAm, somewhat south of due NW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Solar-terrestrial indices for 11 February follow. Solar flux 75 and mid-latitude A-index 1. The mid-latitude K-index at 1500 UTC on 12 February was 3 (25 nT). No space weather storms were observed for the past 24 hours. No space weather storms are expected for the next 24 hours (SEC via DXLD) See also LIBYA [non] Glenn, You would unlikely notice a rapid enough change in the frequency of an HFBC signal due to Doppler Effect. More like a rapid variation in PHASE. I'm not sure of the physics of of the matter, but only if you had a frequency-stable signal that you could compare with 17660 could you detect the phase variation. Doppler Effect becomes a factor, I believe, in the UHF range. Aurora Borealis modulates signals passing through it with a "gurgle" or a raspy "hum." Transmitter instability is the likely source of the frequency instability. 73, and no more embargos (Charles A Taylor, WD4INP, Greenville, North Carolina ABDX via DXLD) That seems sensible, but I am not convinced, as have noticed SW frequencies wavering before under such conditions from stations not known to have unstable transmitters (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Feb 13 Afropop was on 17660 yet again until 1531* but no flutter today. Africa Numéro Un on 17630 was in normal programming of its own in French around 1500 check, but after 17660 went off I checked 17630 and it was off too; only CRI in English via Mali was to be heard. Finally at 1536 mixing with open carrier, and at 1537 ANU was back on 17630. It looks like a transmitter change was made during this period, i.e. 17660 unit moved to 17630 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GEORGIA. Radio Abkhazia. Re Mystery transmitter tests on 15630, 11645, 5865: Dear John, I do not know anything about an additional VOA transmitter. I do not believe that this is feasible in Avlis. Thessaloniki is prohibited, also. In general ERT facilities are diminishing from day to day. Instead, I heard that OTE (The Telecommunications Company) is interested in carrying our program from a site in Western Peloponese, used in the past as part of their Coastal Service (ships). Best regards, (Demetri Vafeas, ERT, to John Babbis, MD, Feb 11, DX LISTENING DIGEST) This OTE transmitter may be an old SSB unit (John Babbis, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Plausible. The whole nature of these signals (limited audio response, behaviour at tune-up) strongly indicates a non-broadcast transmitter, so it should indeed be the suggested OTE utility site what is testing here at present. Tonight it is obvious that the testing transmitter on 5865 cuts off within less than a second when there is no audio, either by a natural pause or by one of the frequent audio breaks. Presumably not a bug but a feature of the utility transmitter in use. Well, the signal strength is not that bad, but the audio quality leaves much to be desired. Perhaps it is possible to improve it by replacing certain audio filters from the previous utility use, provided that the transmitter itself can modulate audio beyond 3 kHz. "Prohibited" presumably refers to the circumstance that they simply have no antennas to run the 250 kW transmitters they got. Such antennas are really expensive items, somewhere above 1 million Euros for a 4/4 curtain if I recall correct. Furthermore one needs sufficient space on own property for such an antenna, and concerns of electromagnetic radiation have to permit its construction on the available space (one can't blow 250 kW with 20 db gain into a nearby settlement). It doesn't help at all here to have donated transmitters on stock, and of course these circumstances make it so sad that they were not able to take over the defunct IBB site (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Feb 11, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) So, maybe they're using the SW facilities of coastal station Olympia Radio (SVO) which I think is located north of the city of Pyrgos. This picture is possibly from that site: http://www.gener.gr/images/OlympiaRadio03.jpg (Jari Savolainen, Finland, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Olympia Radio transmitter site near Pyrgos, suggested to be the origin for the recent V. of Greece SW tests. Thanks to Andrea Borgnino for the approximate coordinates 73, (Mauno Ritola, shortwavesites yg via DXLD) The word "diminishing" can be taken literally. Already in 2005, ERT "gave away" 20 acres of its "Avlis" SW transmitting (actually located at Kalochori in the Avlida community) for the building of a social rehabilitation housing complex (Bernd Trutenau, Lithuania, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Viz.: [12] For the Fight Against Drugs Partnership of Hope 22 Jun 2005 17:43:00 By Vicky Keleri A rehabilitation treatment program for adults will begin in Avlida with the partnership of the City of Athens, ERT and the Multiple Intervention Center for Dependent Drug Users (KPP). The name of the program is "Choice" and includes five stages, from entrance to social rehabilitation. The facilities will be built in an area of 20 acres in Kalochori, Avlida that was given by ERT. The City of Athens has taken the study, the construction and the equipment of the work and the funds for its financing, while KPP is responsible over the clinical program, the preparation of specifications, the staff and the operation of the program. The slogan of "Choice" is "Winning Life" and its message is that individuals trapped in drugs are not "a lost case." United for the Drugs Problem In a Press interview, given this noon concerning the rehabilitation program, the Mayor of Athens noted that the operation is based on the unification of powers, funds and knowledge, underlining that the City of Athens will not remain passive against the problem of drugs, but takes up initiative and advances the idea of partnership. She added that the treatment procedure of "Choice" is based on land cultivation which symbolically and practically demands hard work, but also give great satisfaction, giving individuals that want to break free from drugs perspective, skills and a career. On his part, President and Managing Director of ERT, Christos Panagopoulos, stated that the Public Television has a duty to fulfill a work for society. He also made a commitment that ERT will participate and promote the program using all its power. The great importance of the partnership between KPP and the City of Athens was stated by President of KPP, Mr Paraskevopoulos and called on other Municipalities that have reservations to follow this example. Mr Paraskevopoulos made extensive mention to the five stages that will make up the program, explaining that the following are recommended: a counseling station in Athens with the immediate entry of users without a waiting list, a Body Rehabilitation Center in Avlida equipped with 30 rooms, a Treatment Community Hostel, also in Avlida for 50 individuals and a nine-month duration, a Social Rehabilitation Center in Athens with a duration of eight to 10 months, and a Family Support Center for the families of dependent drug users. (gh, DXLD) ERA5 test, now believed to be from the Olympia Radio maritime site, Feb 12 at 1512 on 15630 had frequent breaks in transmission, and when transmitter stayed on there were also quick breaks in modulation. At 1523 I found that 15630 was off more than it was on. // 17525 Avlis with no such problems. If they can`t get the Olympia utility transmitter to funxion in AM, these tests will have been fruitless. Rechecked at 1602, I found that 15630 no longer was breaking up, presumably after Avlis resumed that frequency, probably the transmitter which had been on 17525 but no longer heard (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Checking again on Feb 13, at 1519, 15630 was managing to stay on without any breaks in carrier or modulation, so maybe there is hope; // 17525 and 1520 ID. Nope, at 1527 during music there were some modulation dropouts, but carrier stayed on. At 1552 recheck, 15630 was off; John Babbis says it closes around 1545. I stayed on frequency, and 15630 came back on at 1553 with carrier, now presumably Avlis, and 1557 into music. 10 kW to a log-periodic is doing very well as far as signal strength compared to 100 or 250 kW from Avlis curtains (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) The following message just received from Olympia Radio explains the "mystery" transmissions. The station was put into service in 1972 and has two 100KW Marconi short wave transmitters and a veritable forest of antennas covering 1,100 acres, arranged in three lines to cover the desired directions. The pylons supporting the 6 MHz arrays are truly impressive at 328 feet. Each line has eight separate antennas for the 6, 7, 9, 11, 15, 17 and 21 MHz broadcasting bands. 1.5.a Antennas Each antenna consists of two curtains with a total of 8 horizontal dipoles. The dipoles are all fed by open wire feeders which can be remotely switched to enable radiation in two directions 180 degrees apart. There are also three curtains for the 11 meter band (26 MHz) which may be put into service during sunspot cycle 22 if the M.U.F. allows it. For transmissions to neighboring countries like Cyprus, Turkey, the Balkans and the countries of the Middle East, there are two rotatable log periodic antennas with a high angle of vertical radiation (45 degrees) and a wide angle of 32 degrees in the horizontal plane. 1 The remotely controlled switching center allows each of the two transmitters to be connected to any one of the 23 antennas. 2 Electromechanical protection circuits ensure that a transmitter can only be connected to an antenna that is tuned to the same frequency. 3 The change of antennas and transmitting frequencies is made during the ten-minute interval between programs, which always begin on the hour, preceded by the now familiar signature tune of a shepherd playing his flute with the tinkling of sheep-bells in the background, recorded in 1936, followed by the Greek National Anthem. The special programs of news and features originate in the broadcasting headquarters in Athens and go on the air throughout the 24 hours of the day in Greek, English and many foreign languages. Reports of reception are welcome and should be addressed to K.E.B.A., Avlis, Greece. (The Greek initials stand for short wave transmitting center.) # Avlis has three series of curtains, some of which have been used in the antipodal mode: HR1 (46 / 226 and 80 / 260 degrees), HR2 (105 / 285 and 120 / 300 degrees), HR3 (2 / 182, 46 / 226, 105 / 285, and 143 / 323 degrees). Also, two log-periodic rotatable (0 to 360 degrees) which have been used for the azimuths of 2, 8, 52, 100, 292, and 306 degrees. On May 12, 1988, Professor Athanasios Dermanis of the Thessaloniki Station wrote the following: "Within a short space of time, our new rhombic antenna will be broadcasting at 315 degrees and the power of our transmitter will remain at 35 kW." Dear Apodimos: On UT Monday from 0010-0110 I had an enjoyable hour listening to "Greek in Style" with Adrianna presenting popular recordings with the titles announced in both Greek and English. This is a big help to listeners who enjoy the music and get instant translations of the song title and become familiar with Greek words. Dear Friend Babis: On the above program, I started with a great signal at 0000 UT on 9420, but by 0100, it had faded out. Then, I switched to 7475 and the signal remained steady. What sort of antenna does 9420 use? Would it be possible to move the frequency of this transmitter to the 41-meter band, since there is a propagation problem in the 31- meter band after 0100 UT in this area? There seems to be a heat wave in Athens; how about trading some of our expected snow (2-4 inches tomorrow) for a little zesta? (John Babbis, Feb 12, to ERA via DXLD) ** GUATEMALA. Might be worth monitoring them over the next little while...assuming they are still heard. I found an online radio station from Guinea, playing some really funky music, kind of a cross between Afropop and Zydeco with a hint of rap and Arabic influences. AIR’S DIGITALISATION TO STRETCH BEYOND 2015 The All India Radio digitalisation programme may not be complete by 2015 due to shortage of funds, says AIR engineer-in-chief AS Guin to Indiantelevision.com. The shortwave bands will be digitalised first and this can be achieved by 2015, provided the Planning Commission releases the entire amount, but mediumwave ``which is the poor man`s band`` will not be fully digitalised and more specifically, there will not be complete switch off from analogue to digital radio, Guin explains. Shortwave transmitters that have been in use for more than 20 years will be replaced and these alone would be DRM compatible, not all. The content for SW and MW have to be different, because if the same content is run on both, why would anyone buy a costly handset to catch SW?" he asks. Sirius Dropping C-SPAN I have just learned that starting tomorrow, February 14, Sirius Satellite Radio is dropping C-SPAN (channel 139) from its service. A response to my inquiry about this matter received from C-SPAN explains that although C-SPAN was a charter network on the satellite service, it could not come to a new contract agreement with Sirius because of the latter's demands that C-SPAN agree to have its programming pre- empted at will for coverage of sporting events. In effect, Sirius wanted to C-SPAN to agree to become a secondary channel on its service. The promise of satellite radio -- at least the Sirius version of it -- is rapidly fading away, in my view. Of over 150 channels, to have one full time channel for the unbiased presentation and discussion of important public affairs events and issues should not be too much for a subscriber to ask. With the loss of PRI World a few months back and now this, Sirius takes a further step back from providing a place for intelligent, thoughtful radio. If you are a Sirius subscriber and disagree with Sirius's stance on this matter, I urge you to call and/or write to them at customercare@sirius-radio.com and 1-888-539-7474 and to C-SPAN at radio @ c-span.org According to the CSR I spoke with at Sirius's 888 number, they are receiving a number of calls in protest already. The phone number may be the better route. And since Sirius has yet to post the changes to its web site or officially notify its subscribers, we can only hope that this chorus increases in intensity with time. Of course, whether complaining will have any effect is problematical (John Figliozzi, Halfmoon, NY, Feb 13, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) /cynic on --- Oh, there is one channel remaining for this. #100, Howard Stern. --- /cynic off (Richard Cuff, swprograms via DXLD) Surely you are not arguing that paying Stern what they paid (and are still paying) him was a sound economic decision. The service's finances are still in the toilet and the stock price is teetering on the rim (John Figliozzi, ibid.) I just sent an email to Sirius and asked why they can pay a billion dollars to Howard yet drop C-SPAN to make room for Sporting Events. > It makes no sense (Jim Strader, MA, ibid.) Unless you're Mel Kamarzin... (Figliozzi, ibid.) It's simple economics, unfortunately... Assumption 1: It costs more to increase bandwidth than it would to annoy a subset of subscribers. Their contractual obligations probably prohibit limiting the sports coverage or the Stern coverage, or they figure the sports service limitation would be more likely to drive subscribers away than limiting C-SPAN. The good news is that satellite radio remains a "give away the cow, but sell the milk" business. Yes, we can gripe about our sunk investment, but the prices for the receivers themselves are still relatively small, and switching costs are small (unless one chose a longer-term subscription. C-SPAN remains on XM, if one can trust the website (Richard Cuff / Allentown, PA, ibid.) I wish they paid him ONLY a billion, Jim... (Figliozzi, ibid.) Whether or not the Stern decision was sound is irrelevant. It's a done decision. Now it's only a matter of disappointing a group of listeners, or "pick your poison" (Richard Cuff / Allentown, PA, ibid.) ** IRAN. Transmissions in Arabic on SW reported off the air.`` We were discussing this some weeks ago, about the reappearance of 15235 and some other frequency. (Not still heard?) I am not yet convinced that 17725, 21695, etc., are not still from Issoudun, and the above note, without any further details, is not that explicit. 73, (Glenn Hauser, ibid.) Shouldn't one expect (taking into account the "involvement" in the Moyabi transmitting complex that Libya announced) that also V. of Africa would perhaps be carried via ANU transmitters in Gabon? (Bernd Trutenau, Lithuania, ibid.) But finding any to spare would be a problem during the busy afternoon (gh, DXLD) The other frequency besides 15235 is/was 15415, and I think both were heard back in last year, during the late morning when no Voice of Africa is on air, so the Arabic programming heard here must have been something else, like LJB's main service. Keep in mind the skip distance for 16 and 13 metres signals when discussing if they could originate from Libya now; I'm sceptical about this as well. LJB via Moyabi: Possible, but how many working transmitters are available there at present? We should also keep in mind the French involvement in ANU and the Moyabi plant. I would have to dig into the details, but it is my understanding that ANU is French-owned and TDF is involved in the frequency coordination for Moyabi transmissions. To my knowledge ANU is carried on FM in Paris, RFI was carried via Moyabi until last year and NHK showed on some graphics that the other way round their feed to Moyabi is linked via Paris as well. I assume that a set of bidirectional audio circuits is up between France and Gabon, so it would be no big surprise if a special Afropop feed is available in France, too (this considering the reported indications for the Afropop signal temporarily originating from Europe instead). In short, I have an impression that the whole story is a bit more complex than just LJB abandoning Issoudun in favour of Moyabi (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Feb 11, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Re: Libya Re 7-017 --- We do not know in which form Libya is involved in Moyabi. The agreement about the Libyan "investments" was signed between the two governments and Africa No 1. It seems not unlikely that the "investments" could include an expansion of the transmitting facilities. It is thinkable that, for example, Libya could have transported one or several of its dismantled transmitters down to Gabon and could have installed them at Moyabi, or could have purchased new transmitter equipment altogether. NEW STATUS OF NETHERLANDS ANTILLES DELAYED TILL DECEMBER 2008 The Dutch Minister for Administrative Reform, Atzo Nicolaï, has agreed that the new status of the Netherlands Antilles will only come into effect at the end of next year. Previously it had been agreed that the islands would assume their new status in mid-2007. Now a new date has been set: 15 December 2008. The island of St Maarten will then become a country, and Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba will acquire a special status as Dutch municipalities. No decision has yet been made on the status of Curaçao. The Island Council previously rejected a new agreement on the political relationship with the Netherlands. Mr Nicolaï expects that the island will eventually join in with the reforms and also become a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands at the end of next year. The Netherlands has reserved almost half a million euros to support the changes in status. A large part of the money will be spent on debt reduction. The Lenta article also mentions the matter of Radio Arsenal, the BBC's former FM partner in Moscow. Some other interesting stuff about media matters can be found there as well. So much for all the hype about the Russians kicking the BBC off air in Moscow. I think I said it before: The really interesting aspect of this matter is how the "western" media covered it. And I'm speaking about much more than just the perception of Russia here. Btw, this is not meant to be an argument against doubts on the concept to rely on rebroadcasters; instead it even corroborates them: International broadcasters may lose their FM slots not only due to political interference but also due to ordinary commercial considerations on the side of their partners. Remember the relaunch of Radio Dovira in the Ukraine which deprived Radio Liberty of its major rebroadcasting partner there. Radio Dovira meanwhile became Avtoradio-Ukraina, a station which apparently choose to broadcast music rather than talk, talk, talk. All the best, (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Feb 11, DX LISTENING DIGEST) BBC AND VOICE OF RUSSIA TO SHARE FM FREQUENCY IN MOSCOW February 11th, 2007 - 12:01 UTC by Andy The Russian newspaper RBC Daily reports that the BBC Russian service and the Voice of Russia will jointly launch a new FM station in Moscow on 99.6 MHz. The project has the working title “The Big Radio” and test transmissions are due to start next month. The station will broadcast some locally produced material as well as carrying programming of the BBC Russian Service and the Voice of Russia’s service for expatriates. The General Director of “The Big Radio” is Alexander Musalkin, who explains that the project is an attempt at dialogue between the two countries, and also gives the BBC the opportunity to return to the air on FM in Moscow. Earlier, the BBC had a cooperation agreement with private broadcaster Radio Arsenal, but in November that station ended its cooperation. Industry experts are skeptical about the future of the project. The head of the Internews in Moscow, Ilya Kirija, draws attention to the highly competitive nature of “colloquial” radio in Moscow. And editor- in-chief Alexey Venediktov points out the differences in concept of Russian and British broadcasting to foreign countries, and regards the sharing of of a frequency by the two radio stations as “a strange alliance”. A good strong signal on here. 13580 was also late on, and initially started with some transmission in American English (not // with other audible VOA outlets) but this was corrected at 1606 to Somali, parallel but not in sync with 15620. The 13 MHZ outlet is only weak. No chance on 1431 due to co-channels. I now have Swahili on air from 1630 on 17580(BOT) (Very strong) and 17705(BOT) (good strength) with hum and other voice in audio. There is a transmission on air on 21480(SAO) at very weak strength but sounding the same. [Later:] Somali 1700: there are signals on both 13580 and 15620 but both are very weak and unidentifiable. Swahili continues past 1700 on 17580 and 17705 but at reduced strength - and still with hum in audio. 21480 now inaudible if still on air. Studio-7 came up slightly late on 15775 after programme had started at 1700+. (There must be some rapid frequency switching taking place!) This one is very strong at my location but I can hear some musical notes in the background when transmission is speech only. It would be easy to miss if I wasn't listening for it. Is a very tiny signal at my place, noted on Etón/Lextronix E1 Radio, Kenwood R1000 - latter the best signal here, and AOR 7030 sets. Just above threshold, but couldn't recognize the language yet. Yesterday and today visited DXtuner, and joined some Swedish and Belgium receiving posts, but noted only scratching noise. Then tuned in to the Phuket Thailand Icom R75 receiver and heard the same program some few dB stronger like S=1-2 level. But still far of a strong signal. Could hear the trumpet fanfare at the end of the broadcast and few addresses given, one in California, USA, also numbers like '2682' could be noted. Took a MP3 recording using TotalRecorder professional version via soundcard (Wolfgang Büschel, wwdxc BC-DX Feb 9 / 10 via DXLD) The station opened at 0800 UT with trumpet fanfare. The following program was in Korean. Not too bad signal strength, but low modulation level. No ID heard. Fluttery signal. (later) The weak and fluttery signal makes me think 11895 is a relay via Taiwan. That would also explain why there is no TOH ID. Relays from places further to the east usually are heard much better. The clue to identifying Korean is by the "honorific" verb ending - nida, which in broadcast practice is used at the end of all paragraphs of text, except in questions, where it is -nika. (gh, DXLD) Glenn: I'm sure you must have seen Dino Bloise's publicity, but just in case, we are beginning to air his new DX program Frecuencia al Día UT Tuesday 1530-1600 on 7385 and UT Saturday 0400-0430 on 9955. The first edition has just been produced, and we are airing it tomorrow morning at 1530 (Jeff White, UT Feb 13, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Apparently the only SW station then is WRMI. 0400 UT Sat? That used to be part of R. República`s block, so there must have been a change there (gh, DXLD) Glenn: Yes, Radio República is eliminating all weekday (Mon-Fri) transmissions via WRMI on 9955. This is supposedly temporary, for a month or two. The Saturday and Sunday (local time) schedule will remain the same. Monday-Friday broadcasts via T-Systems and CBC relays remain the same. Don't ask me what we're going to do with that airtime yet. DX programs and other exile programs should remain the same after the time change in March, except for the UTC time shift (Jeff White, WRMI, Feb 13, DX LISTENING DIGEST) But your hours on 7385 depend on when WEWN is on 9955, so won`t there be more complex changes than just one UT hour earlier? (Glenn to Jeff, via DXLD) Glenn: Yes, it's a real mess this time. We will only be on 7385 from 1400 to 1600 UT as of A07, using 9955 before and after that. Specific programming alterations will depend in large part on what Radio República decides to do by that time (Jeff White, WRMI, ibid.) ** U S A. I can confirm, finally, that WDAF-1660 is actually using these call letters, although at all other times, even right after the legal ID, the drop-in non-ID's are something like "Classical 16-60, KXTR". I heard a very muted "WDAF, Kansas City" at 4 pm today, February 10, after listening from 12:55 (while I was laying out DXN) and not hearing a single legal ID until 4 pm. The Metropolitan Opera broadcast was on, and even though they allowed a one-minute, announced station break at about 1:55, all I heard was one minute of dead air. During the opera broadcast, there were numerous dropouts (when the soprano hit the high notes, hi), and the broadcast quality was very poor. It's very obvious to me that the station is unattended, automated and satellite-fed, a far cry from the days when it was on FM and locally-originated from studios in Independence, MO (located on Swearingen Road, of all places) (Paul Swearingen, Topeka, Feb 10, NRC- AM via DXLD) Yesterday I noted that WDAF-1660 was mumbling their legal ID and then using "Classical 16-60, KXTR" and other non-ID's. Today I finally caught "WDAF, Liberty" spoken VERY quickly at the top of the hour (2- 11, 6 pm CST) on 106.5. So now we have two WDAF's ... oh, the riches of two of them! Unfortunately, neither resembles even closely the WDAF I listened to from about 1950 to 2006 or so, until the day that David Lawrence, who had been their premier deejay since the early '70's, retired. The Wolf has eaten WDAF. Resquiat en pax [sic] (Paul Swearingen, Topeka, Feb 11, ibid.) ** U S A. The Terry L. Krueger/Gerry Bishop (Krueger/Bishop) credited logs were made during our drive to/from Clearwater to Orlando on Saturday, February 10th to attend the Orlando hamfest at the Central Florida Fairgrounds. All times UT. 780, FLORIDA, KAZ5520, "Florida State Fair Information Radio," Tampa; inactive for the second year in a row during the Fair. No trace of it on our direct I-4 drive-by, mid-morning 10 February, 2007. The blue with white text 780 highway sign was gone last year (extensive construction and mounds of dirt in that area at the time). The sign was not put back up; presume this one is no more (Krueger/Bishop) 1510, FLORIDA, WPZW713, City of Lakeland; 1400-1405 10 February, 2007. Certainly the one despite being nearly useless on the audio. Long looped female or mostly female, impossible to make anything out though as it was QRMing an unidentified licensed station and with a slight het (unable to determine who was off-channel), audible around County Line Road to the Polk Expressway exit eastbound. 1610, FLORIDA, "Manatee Information Radio," Crystal River; noted active again on the daytime drive south to Krueger's Clearwater location while passing through Crystal River. Female looped manatee information, audio hum present. [calls, or an entry for that matter, no longer appearing on the FCC's Wireless Telecommunications website - - TLK] (Gerry Bishop) 1620, FLORIDA, Dept. of Transportation HAR, on I-4 at mile marker 27 eastbound, Polk County; male quick loop read way too fast regarding how to report road range and mention of http://www.I4polk.com No DTMF tones. (Krueger/Bishop) 1620, FLORIDA, Dept. of Transportation HAR, on I-4 at mile marker 53 eastbound, Polk County; female loop with identical text as the mile marker 27 HAR, only read slower. No DTMF tones. Still audible at Exit 60 (near the FL-429 toll entrance). (Krueger/Bishop) 1640, FLORIDA WQDC927 City of Casselberry; 2345-2358 10 February, 2007. NOAA Weather Radio audio with a couple of useless city proclamations (on by the City Manager) cycled in. Very strong, though doesn't appear to cover all of the city with an A Grade signal, at least heading up US 17-92 to Sanford. (Krueger/Bishop) 93.5 MHz, FLORIDA (PIRATE), unidentified, Orlando; 1940+ 10 February, 2007. Heard on Colonial Drive between the Central Florida Fairgrounds to downtown with nonstop hip hop and gangsta rap. Big signal and modulation. No announcements noted, maybe a "Downtown Radio" morph or re-morph? (Krueger/Bishop) 93.9 MHz, FLORIDA (PIRATE), unidentified, Orlando; 1945+ 10 February, 2007. Tuned in at Colonial Drive at Tampa Avenue, Orlando (near downtown), quasi-English reggaetón and soca. Big signal, no slogan ID's. Also noted at 2258 not too far away in north Orlando at about the same level with Mystic Vibe store ad, which was pushing "Bob Marley shoes" (huh, shoestrings tied in dreadlocks?), but still no slogan ID. Clean, a bit heavy on the bass. (Krueger/Bishop) 96.9 MHz, FLORIDA (UNLICENSED but PT. 15) Assembly Hall of the Jehovah's Witnesses, Plant City; 1340-1342 10 February, 2007. Local level open carrier very briefly present while zipping along I-4 eastbound, peaking near Exit 22 (old 14). The church is near this exit, north side of I-4. Same open carrier noted on the return home. I've noted this one while passing through on some mid-mornings with live church service audio, including Spanish sermons at undocumented (poor records on my part) times. Mono signal. Audio presumably intended for attendees on and near the property, and/or used as an A/V equipment feed. 97.1 MHz, FLORIDA (PIRATE), "9-7-1," Orlando; 1955+ 10 February, 2007. A new one here (a fair amount of activity on this channel previously, though no reports I can locate for quite awhile). Loud, somewhat overmodulated near downtown, first tuned to on Colonial Drive and S. Orange Blossom trail vicinity. Local store ads, promos for local hip hop and rap group shows at clubs, Afro male DJ, several "Nine-Seven- One" slogan ID's. Sunday, Feb 11, at 1512, there was nothing on any of the usual five frequencies for Aló Presidente via Cuba --- 17750, 13750, 13680, 11875, 11670. However some minutes before 1500, there was something in Spanish on 13680, presumably this with an early close (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) There would be no talk show on Feb 11 wrote El Universal newspaper on Feb 10: Sin ¡Aló, Presidente! Nel 2004 "Aló Presidente" fu sospeso per due mesi, sempre a causa di una "riforma" (via Roberto Scaglione, Sicily, bclnews.it yg via DXLD) Seems they did the same thing a few months ago for the same reasons. Solar flux at very low levels; optical sunspot observations for the past two days show ZERO SUNSPOTS, and we may be seeing a geomagnetic disturbance during the next two days due to a high speed Solar wind coming from a coronal hole. Solar flux expected to be below 75 units, and that combined with ZERO sunspots is bad news for the maximum useable frequency daily curve’s peak. It’s going to be very low indeed (Arnie Coro, Radio Havana Cuba, Havana, Cuba, DXers Unlimited Feb 13, HCDX via DXLD) The geomagnetic field was generally at quiet to unsettled levels at all latitudes. High latitudes experienced isolated active to minor storm conditions midday on 04, 07, and 08 February due to southward Bz. Solar wind speeds ranged from a low of about 330 km/s midday on 05 February to a high near 475 km/s midday on 09 February. The Bz component of the IMF fluctuated between +/- 8 nT for about 24 hours beginning early on the 6th. Thereafter, and through the balance of the period, Bz did not vary much beyond +/- 5 nT. Activity decreased to quiet levels during the latter half of 01 February, and remained so for the balance of the period. By 30 January, the IMF Bz relaxed, and did not vary much beyond +/- 5 nT for the remainder of the period. Solar wind speed gradually decreased after 31 January, and ended the period near 325 km/s. FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 14 FEBRUARY - 12 MARCH 2007 Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 14 – 24 February, 26 February – 04 March, and again on 07 – 11 March. The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to minor storm conditions. Active to minor storm levels are expected on 14 February due to a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected on 15 – 24 February. On 25 – 27 February, a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream is expected to produce active to minor storm periods. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected on 28 February – 10 March. Another recurrent coronal hole high speed stream is possible on 11 – 12 March that is expected to produce active to minor storm levels. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2007 Feb 13 2324 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Environment Center # Product description and SEC contact on the Web # http://www.sec.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2007 Feb 13 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2007 Feb 14 75 15 3 2007 Feb 15 75 8 3 2007 Feb 16 75 5 2 2007 Feb 17 75 5 2 2007 Feb 18 75 5 2 2007 Feb 19 75 5 2 2007 Feb 20 75 5 2 2007 Feb 21 80 5 2 2007 Feb 22 80 5 2 2007 Feb 23 80 5 2 2007 Feb 24 80 5 2 2007 Feb 25 85 20 4 2007 Feb 26 85 20 4 2007 Feb 27 85 15 3 2007 Feb 28 85 10 3 2007 Mar 01 85 5 2 2007 Mar 02 85 5 2 2007 Mar 03 85 5 2 2007 Mar 04 85 5 2 2007 Mar 05 85 8 3 2007 Mar 06 85 5 2 2007 Mar 07 80 5 2 2007 Mar 08 80 5 2 2007 Mar 09 80 5 2 2007 Mar 10 80 10 3 2007 Mar 11 75 15 3 2007 Mar 12 75 20 4 (http://www.sec.noaa.gov/radio via DXLD) ###
